The manga just weirdly makes him VERY expressive which I was actually very confused when I read the manga before the anime.

Same. I actually started the manga first, but got bored and dropped it, even forgetting the name of the title. So when S1 of the anime started in 2017, I thought it felt familiar, but I didn't remember reading a manga with a character like Ayanokojui and dismissed the similarities. One google search later, I was shocked. Manga Ayanokouji expresses himself and reacts like any other normal teenage slacker. He's just somewhat socially awkward and does seem to have an interest in girls.
